Description:
Phycocyanin is a dark blue powder isolated from spirulina. It is mainly found in cyanobacteria, red algae and crypto-algae. Phycocyanin is also commonly divided into C-phycocyanin and R-phycocyanin, the former mainly found in cyanobacteria, the latter mainly found in red algae, and both in crypto-algae. Application:
(1) Natural food pigments: Phycocyanin is a water-soluble pigment, non-toxic, pure blue, clear and cute, and can be used as an additive in food colorants and cosmetics.(2) Medical and health food: A variety of phycocyanin compound drugs have been successfully developed abroad. The Japanese Kangpai AIDS Research Institute has successfully reported that phycocyanin can improve anemia and hemoglobin. In 1982, Iijima et al. studied that oral administration of phycocyanin in mice increased the survival rate of mice injected with liver tumor cells, and the lymphocyte activity of the experimental group mice was significantly higher than that of the control group. They believed that this protein had immune and disease promoting functions. In 1986, Schwartz and Shklar from Harvard Hospital in the United States discovered that spirulina phycocyanin had an inhibitory effect on some cancer cells.(3) A special reagent for biological, chemical, and cytological experiments: phycocyanin blue with fluorescence, which can be used as a research reagent for photodynamic studies in biology and cytology.
