Contact heater vs Coolant heater

In order to evaluate which engine heater concept that is most efficient we have conducted the following tests:
Car #3 with Euro 6 diesel engine tested with contact heater, PTC heater with pump and
coolant element heater
Conclusions:
**
A contact heater is most efficient in order to preheat the engine block and oil
**
A contact heater will increase the temperature in the engine oil approximately 30-350C more than a coolant element heater
**
A contact heater will increase the temperature
in the engine block approximately 20-250C more than a coolant heater
**
A coolant heater will increase the temperature at the cylinder head approximately 300C more than a contact heater
**
By using a coolant heater the cabin temperature will for the 16 first minutes of the drive be 3-50C above the same as for a contact heater (based on the same assumptions).**
Both the contact heater, the PTC coolant heater and the conventional coolant element heater are all almost reducing regulated emissions and fuel consumptions at the same level (less than 2% variation)
**
A contact heater (300W) will normally use 42% less energy to preheat the engine, compared to a coolant heater (550W)
**
Cold start: a cold-started car reach 20 degrees Celsius (measured at the interior mirror) after approximately 18 minutes driving. With WarmUp installed you start the drive with 220C in the cabin.**
