Advantages of this design include a simple and compact structure, making it easy to clean the interior of the tubes. However, a drawback is that the shell side cannot be mechanically cleaned. Additionally, when there is a significant temperature difference (>50°C) between the shell and the heat exchange tubes, thermal stress (also known as heat stress) can be destructive.To mitigate this, expansion joints need to be installed on the shell, limiting the pressure in the shell side to prevent damage. This design is suitable for applications where the shell side fluid is clean and non-scaling, the temperature difference between the two fluids is not significant, or if it is, the shell side pressure is not high.
