1. What is an EV Charger or an EV Charging Station?
An EV charging station, also known as a charge point or electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE), is a piece of equipment that supplies electrical power for charging plug in electric vehicles (including electric cars, electric trucks, electric buses, neighborhood electric vehicles, and plug-in hybrids).
2. What is the AC Charger and the DC Charger, what' s the difference?
An AC Charger means it uses the alternating current electricity output to feed the electric vehicle(EV)’S battery, while a DC Charger is using direct current to replenish the EV' s battery. The main difference is that the DC Charger is directly charging the EV' s battery whereas the AC Charger is charging EV’S OBC(on-board charger) which is like an inverter(converter) converting the AC to DC then going to the EV' s battery.
3. Does the AC Charger charge slower than the DC Charger, why?
Under the prerequisite that they are same output power, YES, AC is slower than DC. Because generally the OBC of EV has a set converting rate(3.5-22KW), it can only perform as the fixed power, that's why sometimes even using a high power AC Charger still needs much time to fully charge, because it is influenced by the OBC. While the DC Charger can directly charge the battery, which makes it faster.
4. What functions do I need for EV Chargers?
It depends. If you are facing home(residential) market, the easiest function as plug and charge will be enough, or add some extra functions like RFID or APP for smart home ecosystem. If you are focusing on public areas like malls, supermarkets or parking lots, the EV Chargers with OCPP protocol will feed your needs. (It requires you have a CSMS or CPO in advance.)
