PA Consulting’s Callum Franks and Oliver de Roeck were the winning team at the Institution of Mechanical Engineers’ Home Automation Challenge with their design for an automatic pet feeder.
The design wowed the judges with its app-controlled food dispenser and water pump that also notifies pet owners when food and water levels run low. It was such a success that senior colleagues at PA Consulting have picked up on the idea, and the team is now working on taking the product out to clients.
“We have had a lot of interest from people from all round the company, including sales people who are interested in taking the product further,” Callum said. “People now know what we can do, and that has really helped raise our profiles within the company.”
And Callum said the day was a great experience, and would recommend it to other with an interest in home automation.
“The day was really good fun, and it was great to be able to engage with the judges rather than just talk at them for a few minutes about your design,” he said. “It was more of a conversation, and that gave us a great opportunity to demonstrate that we really did know what we were talking about.
“It was really valuable being able to apply the skills you have learnt as an apprentice in a practical way. A lot of the time you go to college and learn all the fields, but you don't necessarily get to apply that in the work that you do.”
“With this challenge you actually get to show off your skills and what you are capable of, and it is a great opportunity to push yourself and do something different,” he added.
Oliver said the challenge was a great learning experience, for both the more technical and the softer side of engineering, and also a great way to gain valuable experience.
“This challenge allows you to take ownership of a project and drive it forward. It is a safe environment in which to learn in a realistic manner.
“I would definitely recommend to anyone to get involved – there is nothing to lose by getting involved, and you can learn a lot of new skills.”
