As a form of energy, natural gas will be increasingly used in Hong Kong to reduce CO2 emission from power generation.
As a form of energy, natural gas will be increasingly used in Hong Kong to reduce CO2 emission from power generation.
This is helped by the utilisation of the high efficiency combined cycle gas turbines (CCGT). Shanghai in China has the capability of providing a complete supply chain for power generation using natural gas, which offers good references to Hong Kong. To acquire an understanding of gas technologies, Hong Kong Branch organised a technical visit to Shanghai from 2 to 6 June 2019. This was held jointly with the Institution of Gas Engineers and Managers Far East District Section and Gas and Energy Division of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers.
The joint delegation visited Hudong Zhonghua Shipbuilding, Wärtsilä China and Shanghai Electric/Ensaldo. They provided an appreciation of the design and construction of the supply chain. The delegation was able to see a 176,000 m3 LNG carrier, LNG re-gasification equipment and the assembly of F-class gas and steam turbines and generators at these facilities. While in Shanghai, the delegation also took the opportunity to visit the world’s largest production facility for automated container port equipment at Zhenghua Heavy Industries Co., Ltd., and gas supply distribution equipment manufactured at Shanghai Fiorentini Gas Equipment Co., Ltd. Delegation convener, Hong Kong Branch committee member, Patrick Y.P. Ng, remarked,
“We feel privileged in joining hands with our sister learned societies to deliver a valuable learning opportunity in natural gas technologies to our Members. The delegates were impressed by the manufacturing establishments in China. What is more, the post-visit discussions among the delegates gave a good opportunity for them to interact with and learn from each other. In particular, young engineers were able to pick up the working experiences from senior and expert engineers in the team, building another layer of sound technical foundation for their future practice in mechanical engineering.
"Such knowledge sharing and mutual interaction added a lot of values to our visit. I am glad that our Shanghai trip has made all these possible.”
