Ahead of the Reducing Driving Emissions seminar, we caught up with Simon Williams, Principal Calibration Engineer at MAHLE Powertrain. Simon explained his role and involvement with regards to the seminar, critical engineering challenges, what he is looking forward to at the event and why it is important for industry professionals to attend.
Q: Could you briefly explain your role, involvement and experience with regards to emissions testing?
Simon Williams >(SW): I have been working in powertrain calibration for the last 13 years and have been involved with emissions testing throughout this time from performing emissions testing through to managing projects which need to deliver to EU, Federal and China emissions requirements. For the last four years I have been leading MAHLE Powertrain’s RDE development.
Q: What is the main challenge facing the industry at the moment regarding emissions testing?
SW: Meeting the additional emissions testing throughput, this is required to meet RDE standards robustly. Additionally, to keep ahead of the fast-changing emissions regulations.
Q: What is the most exciting development in improving emissions testing at the moment, either within your company or in the industry in general?
SW: The ability to move RDE testing back into the lab, this is an area that we at MAHLE Powertrain are concentrating heavily on. Our Real Driving Emissions Centre (RDEC) has been designed specifically to enable full RDE validation to be performed in the lab. The MAHLE RDEC is the only facility in the UK that has whole vehicle altitude capability (from 0m to 5000m); it is capable of performing testing at all known worldwide RDE conditions and beyond! With the inclusion of advanced simulation and modelling techniques we can robustly develop RDE capable powertrains before the vehicle hardware is available.
Q: What do you think is the most important factor to consider when carrying out emissions testing?
SW: Repeatability, a single test does not give an accurate representation of the vehicle emissions. Multiple tests must be performed to ensure that the emissions result is statistically relevant and accurate. There are a number of disrupter firms producing emissions results for public consumption who do not meet this minimum requirement.
Q: What do you think is the biggest challenge facing those involved with emissions testing and how do you think it can be overcome?
SW: Ensuring that the emissions measuring hardware is sufficient to meet the updated regulation requirement.
A clear roll-out and sufficient lead time of future emissions regulation to ensure industry has enough time to guarantee that their facilities are able to measure all pollutant emissions that are to be regulated in the post EU6 environment.
Q: Why do you think it is important for industry professionals to attend this seminar?
SW: >It is important for industry professionals to attend this seminar to keep up to date with all the latest developments in the emissions legislation environment.
Reducing Driving Emissions: Ensuring Compliance with RDE and WLTP will be taking place on 9 July 2019 at One Birdcage Walk, London.
