Seven teams from MarchantCain Design, Leonardo UK and Manufacturing Technology Centre to compete to be crowned this year’s champions.
All eyes will be on the Manufacturing Technology Centre in Coventry on 2 September 2022 for the finals of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers’ Apprentice Automation Challenge.
Taking place annually and organised by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, the Apprentice Automation Challenge tasks teams of apprentices at companies around the world to design and manufacture a prototype of a product that solves a common problem in the home or garden.
The culmination of eight months of design and manufacturing, the finals event will provide all teams with the opportunity to showcase their prototype devices in an exhibition area, take part in formal presentations of their project reports, answer probing questions from the panel of judges and get some feedback on their hard work.
Teams representing current title-holders Leonardo UK will be keen to continue their successful two-year streak but are due to face strong competition from their peers at Manufacturing Technology Centre and MarchantCain Design.
Projects this year range from an automated artificial turf cleaner and smart plant pot system to a drinks device designed to reduce plastic waste and barcode scanner system to track and reduce food waste, all combining mechanical, electrical and electronics engineering to create their functional prototypes for the finals.
Winners of the Apprentice Automation Challenge will not only secure the 2022 title this year and the £2,000 prize money but will also have the chance to exhibit their hard work at the prestigious TMMX Awards held later this year in Liverpool and hosted by The Manufacturer magazine. Teams will also be eligible for the Highly Commended award, with a £500 prize awarded by representatives of The Manufacturer, as well as the Peer Review award, voted for by the teams themselves.
Coverage of the finals event will be provided on the Institution’s social media channels on the day and winners will be announced shortly thereafter.
On behalf of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, we would like to wish all teams the very best with their preparations and look forward to seeing the results of their hard work at the MTC next month.
