Formic acid is a kind of organic matter, chemical formula is HCOOH, molecular weight 46.03, common name formic acid, is the simplest carboxylic acid.A colorless liquid with a pungent odor.Weak electrolyte, melting point 8.6ºC, boiling point 100.8ºC.Highly acidic, corrosive, skin blistering, flammable.It can be miscible with water, ethanol, ether and glycerol, and most polar organic solvents. It also has some solubility in hydrocarbon.Relative density (D204)Refractive index 1.3714.The combustion heat is 254.4kj /mol, the critical temperature is 306.8 ºC, and the critical pressure is 8.63mpa.Flash point 68.9 ºC (open cup).Density 1.22, relative vapor density 1.59 (air =1), saturated vapor pressure (24ºC) 5.33 kPa.
High concentrations of formic acid tend to freeze in winter.
Banned substance: strong oxidant, strong alkali, active metal powder.
Dangerous characteristics: its vapor and air into an explosive mixture, in the open fire, high heat caused by combustion explosion.It reacts with strong oxidants.
Solubility: miscible with water, insoluble in hydrocarbons, but soluble in alcohols.
